| Getting the Message
Understanding and expressing emotions through nonverbal communication
Most “emotional messages” are communicated through facial expression and body language. Often these messages are misunderstood especially when subtle gestures accompany facial cues. For special needs students, understanding the nuances of nonverbal language can seem almost impossible. Special educator and autism consultant Pat Crissey, presents a direct and systematic approach that enables challenges learners to master these vital skills. Students learn to “read” facial expressions in various scenarios and then once mastered, to generalize this knowledge.
Teaching activities include:
- “Seeing” Differences
- Facial Expression Lotto
- Matching Faces
- Mirror Practice
- Guessing Game
- Treasure Hunt
- Facial Expression Collage
- Taking Photos
- Flip Book
Pat Crissey developed this curriculum to specifically meet the needs of those with Autism Spectrum or similar disorders. Covers a too often neglected area that will help your students more effectively read critical social interactions and situations. Covered spiralbound book, 177 pgs., includes Win/Mac CD with printable PDF, 2007.
