Student Readers and Teacher Guides

Connections in the Workplace focuses on how to be a good worker and ways to overcome work-related challenges. Thirty-five on-the-job issues are viewed through the eyes of the four main protagonists with whom students can easily identify. Topics include: independent travel to work, making friends on the job, working with a job coach and manager, helping others at work, cell phone etiquette, becoming a trustworthy employee, helping coworkers and preparing for an evaluation.

Do the Right Thing features the same best-loved characters from Connections as they interact within the community setting. Students are presented with twenty-five community dilemmas that the four main characters must resolve. Topics include: preparing for a hospital visit, handling an emergency, calling 911 for help, witnessing a crime, getting out of a dangerous situation, and preparing to attend a wedding.

Teacher Guides provide five tiered activities per story that assess reading comprehension, vocabulary development and the understanding of underlying social skills. The enclosed PDFs on CDs allows for easy printouts of activity pages and full-color stories.

eReader Software

2009 Winner of Best Education Software in America (B.E.S.S.I.E.) Award, Connections and Do the Right Thing software enables struggling readers and nonreaders to follow highlighted text that is narrated by professional readers. A test at the end of each story provides speech support and an optional hint key directs students to the page that addresses each question. Students can access the software by mouse; touch screen, IntelliKeys or single switch. An assessment and tracking system is included that allows teachers to printout student performance data to prepare for IEP and parent meetings.
